I loved that the world was more developed in The Nightmare Factory. Normally books have a 'sophmore slump' where the second book where the second doesn't live up to the expectations of the first. This was exactly the opposite. I really like the Dream Engine, but I felt more engaged with this follow-up.
I also loved how the point of view changed between Eila and Cora. It's kind of rare to see that in YA and I don't know why. Definitely a great read!
This is a great follow-up to The Dream Engine. Even though I liked the concept and most of the execution of that book, I only gave it four stars because I felt the characters weren't developed enough and they didn't interact with each other enough (for my taste). The Nightmare Factory fixed those issues I had with the first book by developing the characters more and introducing some new characters. I also think this one is a bit spookier than the first. It really takes the whole idea of the dream engine and ramps it up. If you liked the first, you should definitely read this. Even if you didn't read the first, there's enough said about the backstory where you could pick up with this one.
The Nightmare Factory picks up right where The Dream Engine -- one of my favorite books of 2014 -- leaves off, and delivers on too many levels to count. I was drawn in and taken for a fast and furious ride from the start. Alterra opens up in a big way and the twists and turns are better than I expected. I loved Cora's character in this book especially, but the boys introduce more, uh..."creatures" that are pretty f'n cool too. This one is a bit darker than the first, which to me is completely AWESOME! What an amazingly fun read. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

When Truant and Platt announced a sequel to The Dream Engine, I got excited. Dream Engine, despite being written start to finish in just a month, has been my favorite story to come from the Realm & Sands story studio. Then they announced the title and my excitement went down a tiny bit. From the title, I figured it was a story about the undeground world of Pavilian and their role in filtering dreams and removing the nightmares.
But this book was even better than expectations. They took the mind bending "what is reality" aspect of the first book and expanded on that. The strange ship beyond the fog, are they friend of foe? I've read Nightmare Factory twice now and I'm still not sure I know the answer.
That said, I did curse the authors when I got to the ending. I need to fast-forward through time until book 3 is out!
The Nightmare Factory was a pleasant surprise after The Dream Engine. Although I enjoyed the first book of the series, and most especially the Fiction Unboxed that it grew out of, The Dream Engine often felt rushed and lots of downtime with characters explaining back and forth to one another and the audience, sort of the fiction equivalent of what Joss Whedon calls the over-over-two shot in film. So while The Dream Engine was nice, The Nightmare Factory delivered in a way that second books in series typically do not. For one thing, it not only stands on its own, but is actually better—more thoughtful and developed—than The Dream Engine. The characters still spent time explaining, but it doesn’t drag on the pacing as much, nor do Daw Blackburn and other adults come across as roadblock know-it-alls, but rather as more complex characters. There’s less time spent navel gazing and more time with stuff actually happening, and the stuff that does happen (no spoilers here!) is really amazing. So if you are a reader that was on the fence about this series, as I was, give The Nightmare Factory a try because it’s a totally different experience in the same world—more immersive, more action-oriented, more believable, more everything.
The Nightmare Factory is not only a solid followup to The Dream Engine, but it actually improves upon it. Further fleshing out the world of Alterra and introducing the other engines in existence around the world, the story alternates between the points of view of both Eila and Cora which provides some great tension in the narrative. I actually preferred having the multiple viewpoints (with a heavy weighting on Eila as this is her series.) Some great new characters are introduced that I am looking forward to learning more about in the future, and can't wait for The Ruby Room.
This was a very good story. It kept me interested and entertained. The characters were easy to like or dislike. I can't wait to read the next one!
