A little forced proximity and, more often than not, lots of alcohol, and confessions flow. While it's easy to get lost in the voyeuristic melodrama of the stories shared with Jake, the ten stories trace Jake's own emotional evolution. I recommend popping a copy in your travel bag. I had high expectations for AIRPLANE RIDES after reading the author’s introduction. It was thoughtful, well-written, and it certainly piqued my interest when the author said, “This book is hundreds of thousands of frequent-flyer miles in the making . . . I had expected that these memories would fade, but instead they continued to haunt me until I had no choice but to better understand why they mattered.”
The author then proceeds to paint a picture of himself as a jet-setting executive who has shallow friends and weekly flings with alcohol-imbued women—but then he writes, “I sat there, questioning my life.” I assumed he was searching for meaning and a chance to evolve as a person.
Maybe he did, but it’s hard to find in this book.
There are plenty of astute and thoughtful observations by the author, interspersed throughout these disparate stories—and for the most part the stories are entertaining and well-written—but most of the “growth” is simply the author being critical of the shortcomings of his fellow passengers rather than being introspective with regard to his own life. It’s almost as if the author relishes sharing the outlandish things he’s done under the guise of “now I’m a better person.”

These brilliant stories took me back in time to all the interesting characters I have met and the truths shared on these journeys. Next time you’re in the air, look to the person next to you and ask a question. That question may begin an unexpected journey within a journey. Airplane rides is a must read.
After a friend referred me to this book, I downloaded it on to my expecting to read a ~chapter a week (i.e. a casual pace). Reality I opened it up and next thing I knew, I checked my progress bar and I had read almost 40% of the book in my first sitting. Insightful and interesting, Airplane Rides is well worth your time.
